Seven Days, Seven Free Things To Do in Northern Virginia — August 3–9, 2026
We look at this calendar every week, and most weeks it clumps. Four things on Saturday, nothing Tuesday, and a Wednesday that may as well not exist.
This week doesn’t do that. Every single day from Monday through Sunday has something free happening within about twenty minutes of most of Northern Virginia. So instead of ranking them, here they are in the order you’ll actually need them.
Monday, August 3 — Rocknoceros at One Loudoun (Ashburn)
Rocknoceros has nine Washington Area Music Awards and has played Lollapalooza and the Kennedy Center. They’re on the plaza at One Loudoun this morning, 11 AM to noon, free. If you’re reading this too late for today, the good news is it’s a standing date — the Kids Concert Series runs every Monday on the plaza through August 31. 20626 Easthampton Plaza. Details
Tuesday, August 4 — National Night Out, all over the region
First Tuesday of August, streets and cul-de-sacs across Fairfax and Loudoun close for block parties with police, fire, and rescue crews. Fairfax County events generally run 4 to 9 PM. There’s no single map of them — each neighborhood registers its own — so the fastest way to find yours is the county page below, or a call to your district station’s crime prevention officer at 703-691-2131. Wednesday, August 5 — The Pietasters (Alexandria)
The Pietasters have been playing D.C.-area ska since 1990 and still travel with a full horn section. 7 to 8:30 PM at the Leonadus K. Plenty Amphitheater in Franconia District Park, 6601 Telegraph Road. Free, outdoors, bring a chair. Weather line is 571-202-SHOW. Details
Thursday, August 6 — Zydeco at the Government Center (Fairfax)
Zachary Smith & The Mardi Gras Kings bring accordion and washboard to the Government Center lawn, 12000 Government Center Parkway. It starts at 5:30 and ends at 7, which makes it one of the few shows all summer you can get to straight from work and still be home for bedtime. Details
Friday, August 7 — Friday Night Live! (Herndon)
The Reflex plays ’80s covers on the Herndon Town Green. Concessions open at 6, music runs 6:30 to 10, and it’s free to walk in — food, beer, and wine are for sale. This is the closest thing downtown Herndon has to a standing summer block party. Schedule
Saturday, August 8 — a full day
Three good options, take your pick. Commanders training camp holds its Kids Day open practice in Ashburn — gates at 7:30, practice at 8:30, free with a SeatGeek ticket (limit six per person, and they do run out). At dusk, Fairfax County screens Zootopia 2 on the lawn at Sully Historic Site in Chantilly, gates at 6:30. And at 7:30, Beatles tribute band Hard Day’s Night plays the Pavilion at Reston Town Center — 33rd season of Concerts on the Town, free, free garage parking, and it goes rain or shine because the Pavilion is covered. Sunday, August 9 — Sunday Art in the Park (Reston)
Different park, different series from Saturday night. Musicians from Shenandoah Conservatory play an hour of classical on the open lawn at Reston Town Square Park, 7 to 8 PM, presented by Reston Community Center and the Reston Town Center Association. A quiet way to close the week out. Weather line is 703-435-6600.
